Life Begins at Midlife

Welcome to Life Begins at Midlife, the podcast for you if you look like you’ve got it all together… but know something isn’t right.

This is where you stop pretending everything’s fine.

In Season 2, we go deeper into the patterns keeping you stuck in midlife... people-pleasing, losing yourself in roles, over-functioning, and staying small to keep the peace.

Through honest conversations, solo episodes and guest interviews, you’ll see what’s really been running your life and what it takes to change it.

This isn’t about starting over. It’s about coming back to who you are.

From invisible to unstoppable.

The People-Pleasing Woman: Why Saying No Feels So Bloody Hard
You want to say no, but you hear yourself saying yes.
You agree to help when you’re already exhausted. You keep the peace, avoid difficult conversations and worry about letting people down. Then you feel resentful, frustrated or angry with yourself for doing it again.
In this episode of Life Begins at Midlife, Jacqui explores the People-Pleasing Woman: the identity that learns to put everyone else’s comfort, needs and expectations ahead of her own.
We look at why people-pleasing isn’t simply about being kind, why saying no can feel so uncomfortable, and how the fear of disappointing others can leave you overcommitted and disconnected from what you actually want.
This isn’t about becoming cold, selfish or unhelpful. It’s about recognising that kindness without boundaries eventually becomes self-abandonment.
You’re allowed to change your mind. You’re allowed to disappoint people. And you’re allowed to say no without writing an essay to explain yourself.
Because no really can be a full sentence

The Good Girl: When Doing Everything Right Stops Feeling Right
You followed the rules. You worked hard, kept the peace, did what was expected and tried not to disappoint anyone.
From the outside, you may look capable, dependable and completely in control. But inside, something no longer feels right.
In this episode of Life Begins at Midlife, Jacqui explores the Good Girl identity: the version of you that learnt to be helpful, agreeable and easy to love by doing everything “right.”
We look at how this pattern develops, why it can be mistaken for simply being a good person, and what happens when the approval and achievement that once made you feel safe begin to leave you exhausted, resentful or disconnected from yourself.
This isn’t about becoming selfish, difficult or uncaring. It’s about questioning the rules you’ve been living by and deciding which ones still belong in your life.
Because doing everything right doesn’t necessarily mean you’re doing what’s right for you.
If you’ve ever wondered, “I’ve done everything I was supposed to do, so why am I still unhappy?”, this episode is for you.

In this solo episode of Life Begins at Midlife, Jacqui explores the stories we keep playing on repeat. The ones that tell us we’re not good enough, it’s too late to change, we should be grateful, or we’re simply “not that kind of woman.”
These stories often feel like facts, but many were written years ago by other people, painful experiences, or versions of us who were doing whatever they could to feel safe and accepted.
Jacqui looks at how these old narratives shape the choices we make, the opportunities we avoid and the way we see ourselves. Because you don’t have to keep living by a story that no longer fits the woman you are becoming.
It’s time to notice the script, question who wrote it and decide what you want the next chapter to say.

Who are you when you’re not being the good girl, keeping everyone happy, holding everything together or being who other people need you to be?
It’s a bloody difficult question, especially when you’ve spent years defining yourself through your roles, responsibilities and relationships.
In this episode, I talk about the uncomfortable identity wobble that often comes with midlife. That moment when the old version of you no longer fits, but you haven’t quite worked out who you’re becoming.
Maybe you’re not lost. Maybe you’re finally questioning the learnt identities that have been running your life.
This isn’t about finding yourself. It’s about giving yourself permission to decide who you want to be now.

Have you ever heard yourself saying yes when you wanted to say no, apologising when you’ve done nothing wrong, or insisting, “I’m fine, I’ve got it,” when you’re anything but fine?
In this episode, Jacqui explores how the ways we learn to keep the peace, earn approval, stay safe or feel accepted can slowly become part of who we think we are.
She introduces the six learnt identities within The Unstoppable Codex: the Good Girl, the People-Pleasing Woman, the Invisible Woman, the Wounded Woman, the Exhausted Woman and the Masked Woman.
These aren’t labels or diagnoses. They’re patterns that may once have helped you cope but could now be costing you more than you realise.
Instead of asking, “Why am I like this?”, this episode invites you to ask two different questions:
“Where did I learn this?”
“Do I still need it?”

When was the last time you actually felt like you?
Not productive. Not useful. Not organised, supportive or strong. Just you.
In this first solo episode, I’m talking about how women slowly disappear from their own lives. Not through one dramatic decision, but through hundreds of tiny moments: saying yes when you mean no, avoiding conflict, putting your own wants off and becoming the reliable, capable woman who never makes a fuss.
You can love your life and still admit that something needs to change. You can be visible to everyone around you while feeling completely absent from your own needs, voice, ambitions and boundaries. This isn’t about blaming yourself or becoming somebody new. It’s about recognising where you’ve been making yourself smaller and remembering that invisibility may be where you are, but it isn’t who you are.
As you listen, finish this sentence honestly:
“If I’m completely honest, I’m tired of pretending that…”
Who you learnt to be isn’t necessarily who you have to remain.

What happens when you decide "if everyone else can do it, so can I"? In this episode, I'm joined by Katherine, writer, songwriter, and mum of two based in Chester, who's built not one, but two businesses.
One started when her cat Tiggy took up residence at Chester train station and unexpectedly became a local (and now online) phenomenon. The other is Skill Seeds, a five-minute microlearning app Katherine built from scratch with zero app-building experience, designed to be ad-free, safe, and genuinely rewarding for creators from day one.
We talk about what it takes to start something completely new in midlife with no prior experience, why "doom scrolling to bloom scrolling" might be exactly what families need, and how curiosity, not a five-year plan, has driven Katherine's midlife reinvention.
If you've ever thought "it's too late to try something new," this one's for you.

Louise Brown was invited to a future-CEO programme at Oxford's Saïd Business School and her first instinct was to say no. Not me. Not Oxford. I'm too northern. What would I wear?
She went anyway, dragging a bright pink suitcase with a broken handle onto a four-hour train, where a procession of helpful strangers took turns explaining to her how to work a handle. By the time she arrived she was sweating, disheveled and ready to cross the platform and go straight home to Lancashire. What stopped her was a realisation in a small room with the telly on: the only thing keeping her paralysed there was her.
In this episode, Louise, author of Bold, Brave, Brilliant, NLP coach, TEDx speaker and former vice principal with 30+ years in public service, makes the case that imposter syndrome isn't something to fix. It's a phenomenon, not a disorder. It's energy, and it's proof that you care. We talk about why confidence often gets quieter the further up you climb, why senior leaders are the last to admit it, journaling as a way to catch your inner critic in the act, and who's looking after HR while HR looks after everyone else.
Plus: what's next for Louise, a companion journal, a second book on leadership and culture, and why her best ideas arrive mid-run.

You thought healing had an end point. Heather Angell is here to tell you it doesn't and that's actually good news.
In this episode of Life Begins at Midlife, human dynamics coach Heather Angell joins me to talk about the patterns we inherit without ever choosing them, the "coding" we pick up as kids that shapes how we show up in our careers, our relationships, and our sense of who we are. Heather explains why understanding these patterns isn't about being broken or needing fixing, and why awareness alone isn't enough to change anything.
We talk about the difference between reacting and responding, why the wellness industry has become bigger than big pharma (and what that says about us), and why you don't have to heal every single part of yourself to live a full life. Heather also opens up about her own journey — from people-pleaser to the woman she is today and why it took her ten years to get there.
If you've ever felt like your past has decided your future, this conversation will help you see it differently.
In this episode:
Why your patterns aren't your fault
The difference between reacting and responding
Why "being healed" isn't actually the goal
How small shifts create a domino effect in your life
Why you don't have to fix everything to move forward

Living My Best Life: One Adventure at a Time
After surviving breast cancer, Suzy Orr made a conscious decision that she wasn't going to wait for "one day" to live her life.
In this honest and uplifting conversation, Suzy shares how life's hardest moments taught her that tomorrow isn't guaranteed. Rather than allowing fear, grief or uncertainty to define her, she chose to start saying yes to experiences, adventures and herself.
Together, you explore:
How facing mortality changes your perspective on what really matters.
Learning to live with difficult experiences rather than waiting for them to disappear.
Finding hope by always having something to look forward to.
The empowering moment she changed the locks, filed for divorce, and chose herself.
Why "this too shall pass" became one of her guiding beliefs.
How living your best life isn't about waiting until everything is perfect. It's about deciding to make the most of today.
